This tool allows the conversion of temperatures in centigrade or Fahrenheit.

The centigrade scale is based on the properties of water with 0 degrees C at freezing point and 100 degrees C at the boiling point.

The Fahrenheit scale is based on a properties of salt water for the 0 degrees F point and freezing point of water for 32 degrees F.

Scientists typically use the centigrade scale or the kelvin scale when referring to temperatures. The kelvin scale is the same as the centigrade scale though with the zero point set at -273.15 degrees C. This temperature is called absolute zero and is considered the temperature of a substance that has no heat energy.

Care should be taken when comparing temperatures as 20 degrees C is not double 10 degrees C. For this example it is only a small percentage increase as the increase needs to be relative to absolute zero.
